Description
Jesus Fuertes (1938-2006)
Born in Madrid Spain the year of 1938 during the Spanish Civil War, Spanish-Cuban Jesus Fuertes was the son of a bohemian poet who associated with many of Europe's most prominent artists. He was constantly surrounded with the many influences of surrealist Salvador Dali, poet-dramatist Frederico Garcia Lorca, and renowned painter Pablo Picasso.
At the early age of 15, Fuertes traveled to Berlin to display his painting at the Young European Painters Exposition. He was awarded second place and recognized as one of the emerging avant-garde painters of the time. Salvador Dali introduced him to the father of the Surrealist Movement, Andre Breton, who according to his biography, became his benefactor. Jesus Fuertes provides a profound knowledge of the fundamental influences that affected artists and intellectuals all over the world. He visited Pablo Picasso in France and started his first work in Neo-Cubism there. Picasso is said to have been most impressed with the young artist's talent, his mixture of geometric shapes and bright colors and called him a true "genius".
After the first showing of his works in New York, Fuertes left for Italy to receive first prize in Rome for his painting Torneo Medieval in 1963. Various expositions after, Fuertes became a well known painter, traveling to Sao Paulo in 1979, where he lived and developed one of the first forms of "Tropical Neo-Cubism" and eventually attracted the attention of modern art collectors, museums and the general public. In 1996, Fuertes established a studio in Miami, Florida.
Many of his works were acquired by private collectors and major museums all over the world. His works can be found in Queen Sofia of Spain's Museum in Madrid, the Beaux Arts Museum in Brussels, Belgium as well as Embassy Gallery in Miami.
Sadly, he suffered a heart attack and died at the age of 68 on Sunday June, 18 2006 in Miami, Florida. A gifted artist, he will always be a respected Latin influence in the world of art.
