Description
Edgar P Gillet was born in 1924 in Paris. He studied at the Boulle School from 1939 till 1943 then taught for some time at the Julia Academy (1946-1948). At first, Roger-Edgar Gillet's works are abstract. He joins several exhibitions organized by the art critics Michel Tapié and Charles Estienne. He is associated to the Lyric Abstraction movement and to the New School of Paris with painters like Mathieu, Alechinsky, Messagier, Poliakoff, Riopelle, Fautrier, Hartung and Zao Wou Ki. Roger-Edgard Gillet has his own exhibition in 1953 at the Craven Gallery in Paris. The following year, he gets the Fénéon award then after another exhibition at the Gallery de France he is awarded the Catherwood price and moves to the US. When he comes back, he will be among the painters enrolled in the exhibition "Quinze peintres de ma génération" at the Ariel Gallery with his friends Bitran, Doucet, Marfaing, Messagier and Rebeyrolle. After 1960, he turns to figuration and humanity becomes the focus of his work. His productions are clearly represented as series. In addition, he likes to mention themes of religious paintings such as The Last Supper or The Cruxifixion or to evoke landscapes. As part of the Salon de Mai where he is member of the jury, he goes to Cuba and contributes to a collective fresco in Havana. Roger-Edgar Gillet stops painting in 1998. Sick, he passed away in Saint-Suliac near Saint-Malo in 2004.
