Description
John Vignari is a prolific artist, and also an educator, author, instructor and lecturer. He was born in New York City where he began his art career over four decades ago. His early work reflects his fascination with the Sea, and his seascapes prompted critics to dub him "Man of the Sea." He worked on the New York and Brooklyn waterfront as a longshoreman for seven years before becoming an artist. He served in the National Guard and the U.S. Armed forces and is a veteran. He spends his summers in Ogunquit, Maine, and the winters in Florida where he now resides with his wife in Deerfield Beach.
His work has been exhibited in New York City, Ogunquit Maine; Kennebunkport, Maine; Monhegan Island, Maine; Palm Beach, Florida; and Beverly Hills, California.
His paintings have found their way into private collections belonging to former President George W. Bush, who wrote: "Dear Mr. Vignari, we are deeply touched, the Sea gives us great strength and comfort; your wonderful painting captures it all. "
His work is also in the collection of the late John D. MacArthur, the noted philanthropist, who acquired a large collection of Vignari's paintings throughout his career.
Other collectors are: Raytheon Corporation, Lexington, Mass. Publix Supermarts CEO, Lakeland, Fl.
His art career of Marine painting has embraced styles of Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, and currently "Vignari-ism", a unique form he calls "Freedom Flow", something that began in 1979 when he began his own search for a new horizon and freedom. Characteristic of his Sicilian temperament, he boldly eliminated the use of brushes, easels, painting knives and other materials he normally used, and his goal became to achieve powerful rhythm for his abstract painting by dripping paint onto the canvas.
This seeking of "Freedom Flow" resulted after numerous years as a marine artist when he ventured to explore and discover an unquestionable liberation to find a new excitement. Like a never ending movement of the powerful sea, with its continually changing waves, his work is rich in texture with a goal of creating in every painting its own spiritual identity. His paint flows on canvas in dissimilar directions, interpolating into his subject matter. His work is difficult to describe and must be viewed to be understood.
He addresses his work with no steadfast idea of what will evolve in his painting. When he sees a slowly emerging configuration or other contingent matter that is also created in an abstract fashion. Like many creators he challengers and experiment as a lone innovator. He strives for boldness and power depicting a soft impressionable quality with lights and shadows. The "Journal American" in New York described his work as 'Outstanding poetry in color.'
Vignari has given many art-master workshops, lectures and demos nationwide and abroad. He is a member of the Palm Beach Council of the Arts and Broward Cultural Affairs Division. He is featured in the New York Art Review book, SEA, MEN AND SHIPS compiled and published in 1971 by Random House catalogs in New York.
