Description
Leone Minassian was born in 1905 to Armenian parents in Turkey eventually moving to Venice in 1978. He became an important abstract painter around the time of WWII.
He began to paint at the early age of 11 receiving lessons from Leonardo De Manga and Albert Mille, a French painter.
In Naples, Leone Minassian studied in the studio of the Danish painter Axel Jarl and in Venice, studied at the Accademia delle Belle Arti and later with Amedeo Bianchi.
Minassian was inspired by Futurism and the work of Giorgio De Chirico’s Surrealism. He became friends with the artists like Alberto Viani, Giuseppe Santomaso, Giorgio Morandi and Hans Arp.
After the WWII, Minassian found his own expression. His paintings resemble plants with human-like bodies in primary colors. In the 1950s and 1960s, his art attracted international attention. He received awards at Kassel in 1959 and again at the Venice Biennale in 1961.
